Frequently Asked Questions

What if I've never sung in an opera before?

Fear not! The Wellesley Community Chorus is specifically being programmed to welcome and support people of all walks of life and levels of experience. All you need is an interest in singing in order to join. Our wonderful music staff is excited to be a part of your first opera experience!

Is this for all voice parts?

Yes! The original score’s chorus is only for tenors and basses, but we are excited to be using a full SATB chorus, so everybody can sing.

Is memorization required?

No. This is a semi-staged concert performance, so the chorus will be on stage holding their music folders.

Will there be staging?

At the moment, the plan is for the Wellesley Community Chorus to not have staging, but we will determine this together during rehearsals. If the chorus is feeling confident musically, we may add some more movements.

Will this be sung in English or Italian?

Italian. Our musical staff is well equipped to teach Italian diction and that will be a big area of focus in rehearsals. Singing in Italian is fun — and believe it or not, easier to sing in than English!

What shows does this chorus sing in?

The Wellesley Community Chorus will perform only in the Saturday, August 22 performance of The Barber of Seville at Wellesley Hills Congregational Church.

We designed this program to make participation as convenient and accessible as possible, with all rehearsals and the performance taking place in Wellesley. The shorter, more approachable rehearsal process makes it a great fit for singers who are new to opera or simply looking for a lower-commitment opportunity.

Singers interested in performing in both performances are welcome to contact us about joining the full Boston Summer Opera chorus, which includes additional rehearsals and staging in Boston.
